Barefoot & More
Shoe store Barefoot & More is located on a square in the old historic city center of Arnhem. A former supermarket space with a total area of approximately 600 square meters has been transformed by Maurice van Bakel into a retail space for hiking shoes. An inspiring design of the retail space where ‘wandering and discovering’ is used as a spatial organization. The structure of the historic city center, with winding streets and squares, has been continued here in the new interior. Upon entering, the red terracotta and partition walls immediately catches your eye and, which give the space a warm and earthy sensitivity. The walls are placed in such a way that they encourage visitors to explore the streets and squares and direct the visitor to the various shoe collections. Supporting this is a measured lighting plan in which bare fluorescent fixtures are used as so-called room guides, but also as a group. Modular shoe racks specially developed for this store are made of blued steel components. Just as with the rest of the store’s furnishings, as many pure and earthy materials as possible were used. For example, the counter and various displays are made of solid wood and surfaces finished with terra clay plaster. A (almost 95%) recycled rubber ground floor provides acoustic damping. From the outside view, the store opens up through a large number of viewing windows. Through thickened interior walls, they provide an exciting view into the retail space, where the red terracotta walls fill the space as a warm decor.
