Located on a spacious forest plot, with a beautiful adjoining garden, is one of the most beautiful, but also the last designed and built residential villa by the (world) famous architect Gerrit Rietveld. The main house is characterized by a spatial plan, based on a strict grid and consists of a succession of different living and living areas around an open patio. Due to the use of a lot of glass, there is contact with the wooded environment everywhere and there is daylight access everywhere. Maurice van Bakel was given the confidence for this assignment to completely redesign this residential villa (in poor architectural condition) to the wishes of the new residents. He chose to leave the main layout of the house and outbuildings largely intact, but to adapt them to the requirements and comfort of our time by means of a new furnishing and the selection of special materials. The existing wenge wooden floors have been retained, while the old worn marmoleum floors have now been replaced by beautiful seamless, partly cheerfully colored floors and surfaces. Some of the outbuildings have been redesigned to create a space for exhibitions, performances and cultural activities. In line with this space, he also designed a new outdoor square (with a mobile sun protection made of loose cloths) which connects the indoor and outdoor space in a fascinating way. Maurice van Bakel also designed various new and partly integrated furniture and a special lighting system, which enter into a dialogue with its environment. All new designs can be recognized as interventions of ‘luxury of simplicity’, in respect of Rietveld’s style and ideas.
